HARDSCAPINGHardscaping

The use of hardscaping in a landscape can come in a variety of forms.  The materials can be man-made or natural, installed in a wide variety of designs, and utilize several types of construction techniques.  The design and use of the hardscaped area will often help to determine what is the most practical and cost-effective way to install the materials.

Hardscape is generally classified as being vertical or horizontal, wet-laid or dry-laid, or structures.  Vertical hardscapes include walls and columns, horizontals include patios and steps, and structures include pergolas and arbors.  Wet-laid materials make use of concrete and are mortared or grouted into place.  Dry-laid materials are constructed without the use of cement, but are instead held in place by the forces of gravity and friction.

The design of the landscape will incorporate hardscaping to meet the needs of the site as well as the desire of the client. Each type of hardscape has a place where its use is most appropriate. Our designers can help to explain the advantages of the different systems of installation.
