SEEDING PROCESS

  1. For existing lawns that need to be completely reseeded, we begin by killing the turf with one to two applications of Roundup. Before we apply Roundup, we appreciate you mowing the grass down to a short length. This moves the process along faster, as it increases the success of one Roundup application and allows us to continue on to the next step sooner. For lawns that are comprised of a warm-season grass, killing the existing yard must occur in the hottest part of the summer (July-August) to be effective. Warm-season grasses will need at least two applications of Roundup. Typically it takes 7-14 days after an application before you see results. For lawns that are new or bare, we may need to spray and/or mow weeds.
  2. Once the area to be seeded is bare, we till the soil to loosen and aerate soil particles.  If soil is excessively dry or poor, this is a good time to add compost and nutrients.
  3. After tilling, the soil is hand-raked to provide an evenly smooth surface to lay the grass seed.
  4. When the soil is completely prepared, the grass seed is spread. Following the seed, we add a starter fertilizer to supply crucial nutrients to the turf that are necessary for growth. On top of the seed and fertilizer we spread prairie hay, which acts as a mulch to the new seed. The weight of the moistened hay keeps the seed in place from wind, and will eventually break down naturally as the grass emerges.

When we are finished seeding your lawn, it is imperative that you continue the care for your new grass. New seed should be watered at least twice a day, preferably once in the early morning, and once again a little later in the afternoon. Watering at night when temperatures are dropping is not recommended, as it promotes fungus. New grass seed generally takes 7-10 days just to begin emerging, at which point you may cut back on watering. Once some or a majority of the grass has reached nearly three inches in height, you should mow it, regardless of whether or not the entire lawn has filled in. Letting grass grow too long between mowing is harmful, as you will essentially be cutting off too much new growth. Remember - patience is the key to a beautiful yard after seeding. Constant attention and a regular watering and mowing schedule will give you amazing results.
